Raising a Hockey Girl: Slapshots, Lip Gloss & a Whole Lot of Attitude πŸ’πŸ’„

5 minutes

Because apparently, a hockey bag needs a beauty department.

Being a hockey mom to a girl is a whole different experience.

One minute she’s on the ice battling for the puck like she’s fighting for the Stanley Cup.

The next minute she’s worried about what her hair looks like after taking off her helmet.

Girl, you’ve had a helmet on for an hour. We’re working with what we’ve got here. πŸ˜‚

Don’t get me wrong. I love that she’s tough, competitive, and not afraid to get in there and fight for the puck.

But apparently, being a hockey player doesn’t mean leaving the girly stuff at home.

And honestly? I love that about her.

The Hockey Bag Has a Beauty Department πŸ’„

You would think getting ready for hockey would be simple.

Skates? Check.

Helmet? Check.

Gloves? Check.

Entire toiletry bag? Also check.

Yes, my daughter has an actual toiletry bag INSIDE her hockey bag.

Because apparently, we’re not just going to play hockey. We’re also prepared for a full beauty emergency. πŸ˜‚

Hairbrush, hair ties, lip balm, and whatever else she decides is absolutely necessary.

Meanwhile, I’m just trying to make sure she remembered her mouthguard.

My son can travel with one bag and three compartments and still text me asking where his socks are.

My daughter? She’s practically running a beauty salon out of the locker room.

Two hockey kids. Two completely different packing situations.

And somehow, I’m still responsible for making sure everyone gets out the door on time.

The Hair Situation Is a Whole Other Sport

Nobody warned me that being a girl hockey mom would involve this much hair management.

It needs to fit under the helmet, stay out of her face, survive an entire game, and preferably not look like she stuck her finger in an electrical socket afterward.

Simple enough, right?

Wrong.

There’s the ponytail, the braid, the hair ties that mysteriously disappear, and the brush that somehow never seems to be where we left it.

And let’s not forget the postgame helmet hair.

Honestly, I think getting the hair ready should count as part of the warm-up. πŸ˜‚

Tough on the Ice, But Don’t Touch Her Stuff

Here’s what makes me laugh.

I can watch my daughter skate into the corner, battle for the puck, fall down, get back up, and keep going like nothing happened.

But if I accidentally grab the wrong hairbrush?

Suddenly, we have a situation.

Apparently, battling for the puck is no big deal.

A bad hair day? That’s where we draw the line. πŸ˜‚

And then there’s the hockey bag itself.

Let me tell you something.

Just because it’s a girl’s hockey bag does NOT mean it smells any better.

I don’t know what happens inside those bags, but I’m pretty sure something in there is developing its own ecosystem.

The skates, the gloves, the equipment that’s been sitting in a closed bag after practice…

And somehow, right next to all of that, there’s her little toiletry bag.

Beauty and the beast. Literally. πŸ˜‚

She’s Tough, She’s Girly, and She’s Completely Herself ❀️

All joking aside, one of my favourite things about watching my daughter play hockey is seeing all the different sides of her personality.

She’s competitive, determined, and willing to work hard.

She can battle for a puck, skate her heart out, and be part of a team.

And then she can come off the ice, fix her hair, laugh with her friends, and go right back to being herself.

I love that she doesn’t feel like she has to choose between being tough and loving the girly things.

She can be both.

And while I sometimes joke about the amount of stuff we bring to the arena, I know these are the little moments I’ll miss one day.

The early mornings, the car rides, the locker room chaos, the endless snacks, and even the search for yet another missing hair tie.

One day, she won’t need me standing at the door reminding her we’re going to be late.

But for now, I’ll happily keep driving, cheering, packing snacks, and making sure her little beauty department is fully stocked.

Because raising a hockey girl means teaching her to be tough enough to battle for the puck… while making sure she has an extra hair tie. πŸ˜‚β€οΈ

Any other girl hockey moms out there with a full toiletry bag inside the hockey bag? Please tell me mine isn’t the only one!

My Girl Hockey Mom Must-Haves πŸ’πŸ’•

A few little things that make hockey mornings, locker room chaos, and long arena days easier.

  1. Hockey Bag Toiletry Organizer β€” Because apparently, every hockey bag needs a beauty department! Perfect for keeping her hairbrush, hair ties, lip balm, and little essentials together.
  2. No-Snag Hair Ties & Sports Headbands β€” You can never have enough. Seriously. I don’t know where they all disappear to, but I’m convinced hockey arenas eat hair ties.
  3. Detangling Hairbrush β€” For tackling that lovely postgame helmet hair without turning the car ride home into a hair-brushing argument.
  4. Lip Balm β€” Because cold arenas and dry lips are not a great combination. An easy little essential to keep in her toiletry bag.
  5. Insulated Lunch & Snack Bag β€” For the girl who just ate before practice but is somehow starving the second she steps off the ice.
  6. Hockey Equipment Deodorizer & Drying Accessories β€” Because girls’ hockey equipment smells just as bad as boys’. Sorry to break it to you. πŸ˜‚
